F rom inside the Canarian Palm Tree comes the famous La Gomera Palm Honey, a recognized product in the Canary Islands and part of Spain. As it has a certain sweet taste, it is usually used for desserts and pastries, although it is also used for meat or fish depending on the dishes.

Historians have found evidence that Palm Honey has been used on the island of La Gomera since the 17th century. In fact, in order to produce Palm Honey, the processes used in the past are still used, which is not surprising because it is a fairly simple process of elaboration at first sight, although it has its own trick.

How is La Gomera Palm Honey Made?

To obtain Palm Honey, its producers climb to the top of the Canarian Palm Trees and slowly cut the leaves until they find a kind of white leaf. From this leaf, they gently remove layers until a liquid begins to come out. This liquid is the sap of the Palm Tree, which in the Canary Islands is called “Guarapo”.

Once the sap from the Palm Tree or the “Guarapo” is obtained, it is cooked in a pot over a low heat until it obtains a consistency and a colour similar to honey. It is not surprising that this product is called Palm Honey because it comes from a palm tree and has a color and flavor similar to traditional honey.

Palm Honey or Syrup?

lthough the product itself is called Palm Honey, it is not really honey in the sense that it does not come from bees. It is called honey because it is very similar to traditional honey, but in reality it has many differences.

In fact, there is a small legal dispute on the part of the European Union because they do not want this product to be called Palm Honey and replace it with Palm Syrup for the reason mentioned above, but the Canary Islands government is pulling strings to prevent this from happening.

Palm Honey produced in La Gomera is a unique food in the world that you should try if you ever have the opportunity and like sweet flavors.
