The vine was introduced in the Canary Islands sometime be- tween the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries by the conque- rors or settlers who brought the best strains available, with the aim of developing their own wine as soon as possible.
They were the first fortified wines in the world to be the subject of major maritime trade and they were the main source of wealth for the archipelago for almost three hundred years. Our wines have always improved with travel.
They were and still are a favourite of kings: Alexander I, the Tsar of Russia; Francis I of France and even the Spanish King, Carlos III, who it is said “took up to three glasses of wine a day which were brought from the Canary Islands”. Currently the Kings of Spain, Prince Charles and Barack Obama are known to enjoy it.
Thanks to our geographical location, strains in the Canary Islands were spared the terrible epidemics that decimated European vineyards, especially phylloxera. This has allowed us to preserve ancient grapes that in Europe can only be enjoyed in the Canary Islands.
With over 11 Protected Denominations of Origin (PDO), we currently have varieties of grapes that cannot be found anywhere else in the world that are, in some cases, more than 500 years old:
Some of our white varieties are Listán Blanco, Malvasía, Gual, Albillo Criollo, Vijariego, Moscatel, Marmajuelo and Verdello. Our red wines come from the Listán Negro, Baboso Negro, Negramoll and Tintilla grapes.
Canarian settlers took branches from the islands and their form of cultivation to America.
Our wine is made with grapes from century-old vines and rootstock (not vines grafted onto American rootstock to resist phylloxera, but from native plants that were not affected by this disease, which devastated European vi- neyards in the nineteenth century).
It is a wine with a unique and different flavour.
Volcanic soils, a variety of microclimates and the moisture brought by the trade winds are some of the many geogra- phical features that make wines from the Canary Islands different.
You will be amazed by its unique colour and aromatic variety as well as its extraordinary minerality. Our wines have been given awards several times by some of the most demanding national and international juries.
